ABOUT ERIC

I am an international music educator with a passion for technology and psychology.  My philosophy of music education is this: my contract says music teacher, not director.  Thus, I approach my lessons with the goal to help my students first develop critical thinking skills, a positive sense-of-self , and the strategies to persevere long enough to reach their goals.  We just happen to do this through learning to play instruments.

Currently, I teach at Korea International School Jeju in Jeju-do, South Korea to a population of Korean, Japanese, and Chinese students.  About 95% of this population are approaching English as an additional language.  I have the opportunity to practice my language skills both with my students and with the members of Jeju Symphony Orchestra, where I perform as the Principal Tubist and at outreach concerts for rural Korean public schools.

PERFORMANCE

I regularly attend and give clinics for young musicians and educators internationally.  I have given conference talks on Classroom Management, Technology in the Classroom, and Cross Curricular Lessons between Music and Science.

Any competent music educator must be familiar with music composition and arrangement.  I have been fortunate to have a few commissions and published arrangements.  I also received the Morgan-Haydn Scholarship for Compositional Excellence from Eastern Michigan University in 2014.

Since moving to Korea, my performance schedule has been slightly more relaxed than it was in the United States.  Still, I regularly perform as a member of the Jeju Symphony and as a hired performer for concerts held by the Global Education City on Jeju Island.
